When it comes to Gina Stewart's undertaking, the little things really will go a long way.
Stewart, co-owner of the downtown restaurant Sugar n' Spice, is collecting items to send to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The supplies, such as magazines, running shoes and socks, may be taken for granted here at home. Such is not the case, however, during an overseas deployment.
In gratitude, Sugar n' Spice customers who donate items in March will receive a free cup of soup or chili.
Stewart said she was inspired to begin the charitable initiative after hearing a soldier close to her speak of the everyday items troops need or desire.
"It's not about how much," Stewart said. "Everything helps.
"If I get one dollar from 100 different people, then that's money I can use to go buy an entire box of socks or whatever it is they need over there."
Some of the items in demand, according to Stewart, are movies, magazines, running shoes, athletic socks, wipes, Clif energy bars, newspapers, individual servings of nuts, toothbrushes and toothpaste. New or used articles would be appreciated, Stewart said.
She said even letters or cards addressed to "My Hero" or "Soldier" would be welcomed.
Monetary donations also will be accepted and used to buy items for shipment.
Stewart's shipment goal for March is eight boxes of goods. She plans to continue the charity drive through the year.
After gauging the community's response in March, she said, she may change what Sugar n' Spice offers in return each month.
Sugar n' Spice is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For information, call (727) 849-5717.
