Nurses to unionize
With 68 percent of the vote, registered nurses at Community Hospital on Tuesday night decided to affiliate with National Nurses Organizing Committee-Florida.
Nurses voted 155 to 73 to unionize. The National Labor Relations Board supervised the secret ballot election.
Community becomes the third Hospital Corporation of America facility in the region to join NNOC-F.
"This brings us a step closer to realizing our vision of safe staffing ratios that will allow us to spend more time with our patients and give even better care," nurse Lydia Music said in a union news release.
A hospital spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Vendors are needed
The Heritage Park Foundation is looking for vendors for its third annual Traditions on the Green scheduled for Dec. 11. Booth price is $10 and $15 after Wednesday. Those interested can pay online at www.LOLSaturdayMkt.com.
There will be entertainment by Pine View Middle School and Land O' Lakes High School, Breakfast with Santa, a children's Christmas corner, the vendors and more.
The event will be held at Land O' Lakes Community Center. It is sponsored by the Heritage Park Foundation and the Land O' Lakes Saturday Market.

Lighting contest set
Zephyrhills area residents, business and mobile home parks are invited to participate in the 2010 Holiday Lighting Contest, sponsored by the Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce. The area includes Morris Bridge Road to the west; Kossick and Otis Allen roads to the north; Forest Lakes Estates on the east; and Chancey Road to the south.

Deadline to enter is noon Dec. 8. Categories are: residence, recreational vehicle or park model, condominium, mobile home, park clubhouse, and business. Judging will be Dec. 11 through Dec. 15. Winners will be recognized at 9 a.m. on Dec. 20 at the chamber. Winners of the past two years are eligible for honorable mention.

Free insurance policies
Habitat for Humanity of East and Central Pasco is joining with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. to give away free $50,000 insurance policies for children of working families in Pasco County.
Policies are offered through MassMutual's philanthropic program "LifeBridge" and are available to all eligible persons, regardless of affiliation with Habitat for Humanity.
Eligible parents and legal guardians can apply for coverage at a workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 6 at Habitat for Humanity of East and Central Pasco, Dade City Business Center, 15000 Citrus County Drive, Suite 420.
Eligible persons must register by calling Stephanie Black, (352) 567-1777.
Michael Develle and MassMutual Financial Group in Tampa, which offers the program, are donating their time. The program involves $50,000, 10-year policies that are put in trusts to pay for educational expenses of dependent children. There is no cost to parents, guardians, or children in the future.
To qualify, persons must be between 19 and 42 years old; a parent or legal guardian of one or more dependents younger than 18; a permanent, legal U.S. resident; employed with a total family income between $10,000 and $40,000 annually; and in good health as determined by MassMutual's underwriting guidelines. Only one member per household can apply.
Persons diagnosed with heart disease, cancer, HIV or Type 1 diabetes and those abusing drugs or alcohol or having abused them within the past 10 years, are not eligible. Persons on probation also are not qualified.
Persons attending the workshop must bring a copy of last year's tax return and most recent pay stub. This information will be needed to verify income and employment status.
Children's Social Security numbers and dates of birth are needed. Participants will meet with a MassMutual representative, fill out an application, and have a brief medical exam that includes blood and urine tests. All medical information is confidential and used only to determine the LifeBridge program. Florida KidCare representatives will assist anyone with information about children's health insurance programs.
Through Florida KidCare, the State of Florida offers health insurance for children through age 18. School children can attend the workshop with parents and bring homework.
