A doggie day care is holding a Hawaiian-themed event to raise money for charity.
The May 19 Hawaiian Hound Luau at the Canine Cabana will benefit The Spring, a Hillsborough County domestic violence emergency shelter.
Every month, the cabana at 9708 Carr Road holds an all-day event for its four-legged clientele and contributes some of the proceeds to a local charity.
The dogs — of all shapes, sizes and breeds — will be presented with flower leis and frozen yogurt treats, said Angie Frazier, who co-owns Canine Cabana with fellow ex-Busch Gardens Tampa Bay zookeeper Kendall Duncan.
The pooches will compete in a limbo contest, cool off in the pools and learn to hula.
"We'll help the dogs stand and help them hula," Canine Cabana receptionist Lauren McDonald said.
"Our regular dogs are used to the fun things we plan each month," she said. "They love it. When they see us pull out the boxes [of props], they get excited."
In March, Canine Cabana had a St. Patrick's Day event, and in April a spring fest called Pooches on Parade.
"Last month we had colored bubbles, their favorite," McDonald said. "The dogs like being spoiled."
In previous months Canine Cabana has donated to Critter Adoption and Rescue Effort, A Kid's Place and other charitable organizations.
The cost per pooch is $24.95 for a full day of care plus $10 for the luau.
Prior to the party, new canine clients must attend a full-day evaluation, which costs $24.95, McDonald said.
