Children in Redlands Christian Migrant Association schools and educational programs have helped spread holiday cheer for more than a decade with their Christmas card fundraiser.
Now that spirit will extend to the rest of the year.
Officials from the RCMA, which seeks to provide quality child care to children of migrant and low-income rural families, recently announced the organization would be expanding its fundraiser.
"Some of the cards the kids were making could be used throughout the year, so we started wondering why they were only marketed during the holiday season," said Bill Coats, director of communication and marketing for the RCMA.
For almost 15 years, kids enrolled in RCMA schools — including the academy in Wimauma — and after-school programs throughout the state have contributed designs for the Christmas cards.
"We serve about 8,000 kids and we encourage as many of them as we can — especially the older ones — to contribute their artistic work," Coats said.
The designs often are part of a class assignment and are supervised by teachers. A committee consisting of RCMA members, along with representatives from the Florida Specialty Crop Foundation and the Oviedo-based A. Duda & Sons selects the drawings that are transformed into cards.
Coats said RCMA began producing birthday, thank you and note cards last year to complement its Christmas card collection.
Packages of 10 cards cost $15. Proceeds go toward educational materials and services for children in RCMA programs.
