Dealing with an unplanned pregnancy can be daunting, even for those who have strong support. But many women face the challenge alone or don't have the resources or people behind them to help with life-changing decisions.
Such support will be available for South Shore residents beginning Jan. 17.
Life Care, a nonprofit, anti-abortion support and counseling center now operating in Brandon, will open a branch in Ruskin at 310 First St. N.E. Its mission is to provide services and programs to teens, women, couples and families that support bringing a baby to term, providing it with a healthy home environment and making healthy decisions that promote the family unit through Christ-centered living.
"We see ourselves as a local mission partnership with community churches to share the love of Christ and the truths of God's word for marriage and family values," said Karen Brooks, executive director. "We will be building a volunteer base and seeking community support from South Shore churches, businesses and other organizations to fund the center and provide resources for its Baby Boutique."
The Greater Brandon Community Foundation provided seed money, giving $15,000 to Life Care.
Services and programs include pregnancy tests; counseling and education on pregnancy options; referrals for qualified medical care, including ultrasounds; adoption counseling, referrals and support; childbirth and parenting classes; couples mentoring; education on sexually transmitted diseases; abstinence education; mentoring fathers; and post-abortion counseling. All services, including group or individual counseling, are confidential and free.
"We minister to the spiritual, physical, educational and emotional needs of those who come to us for help — anything having to do with childbirth, parenting and building healthy relationships," Brooks said.
Life Care is a nondenominational, apolitical organization founded in 1987. Since then, about 55,000 clients have been served.
Brooks will oversee the new Ruskin branch and is seeking bilingual volunteers who share Life Care's "mission and passion." Initially, the center will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
