A state probation officer was arrested Monday after Polk County sheriff’s deputies said he allowed one of his probationers, a felon, to handle his duty weapon.
Detectives said 38-year-old Jorge Martir developed a personally relationship with the probationer, sending her more than 700 text messages and emailing her a nude photo of himself.
According to an arrest affidavit, Martir went to the woman’s hotel room in Lakeland to conduct a curfew check and found her “upset and crying.” Martir talked to her, then returned after midnight in his personal vehicle, the affidavit said. During this visit, Martir allowed the woman to handle his unloaded duty weapon about 2 to 3 minutes, the affidavit said.
He knew that “she is a convicted felon and cannot hold or be in possession of a firearm,” Polk County sheriff’s spokeswoman Carrie Eleazer said in a news release.
Martir faces a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was booked at the Polk County Jail and later released after posting $5,000 bail.
