A Hillsborough deputy shot and killed an armed man who was threatening to harm himself in Palm River early today, deputies said.

George Louis Garrett, 66, was taken to Tamp General Hospital where he died.

Cpl. Duane Benton, 44, responded to 1003 Turner Road about 3 a.m. after someone in the house called about Garrett who had a gun and was threatening suicide, said Larry McKinnon, spokesman for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Garrett walked out of the home with the gun in his hand and refused Benton's orders to drop it, McKinnon said.

Fearing for his life, Benton shot Garrett, McKinnon said.

No one else was injured.

Benton is a 16-year veteran deputy, McKinnon said.

Deputies are searching the home and conducting interviews.

No more information was released.
