A girl got an unpleasant surprise this afternoon when she returned home and found burglars in her house, Clearwater Public Safety officials said.
When the 16-year-old girl came home to her residence in the 1600 block of Ridgewood Street around 3 or 3:30 p.m., she noticed a black male juvenile bending down in a closet and heard noises coming from the second floor. Police said she looked up the stairs and saw two black male juveniles descending the stairs.
One of the suspects on the stairs fired a handgun in her direction, and the bullet struck the floor, police said. The three suspects ran upstairs and jumped out a second-floor window. Witnesses saw the three fleeing the scene southbound on Orangewood toward Drew Street riding bicycles.
The teenage girl ran to the house of a neighbor, who called police. The girl was not injured.
Two guns, a portable DVD player and miscellaneous jewelry were taken during the burglary.
A perimeter was established. A Clearwater police officer located a subject walking southbound on Highland Avenue approaching Flagler Drive matching the description of one of the suspects. One of the witnesses positively identified him as one of the suspects.
The suspect was transported to the main police station to be interviewed by detectives. He was charged with armed occupied burglary, a felony.
The two other suspects are still at large, police said.
