The state is reporting that a greater percentage of Florida third-graders are reading and performing mathematics at or above grade level compared with last year, according to the 2008 Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test.
Just-released results from the Department of Education show black third-graders narrowed the achievement gap with nonminority students in both subjects, and Hispanic third-graders narrowed the gap in mathematics.
In Hillsborough County, the number of third-graders scoring at or above grade level increased by 2 percentage points in math, and those scoring at or above grade level in reading increased by 4 percentage points.
In both subjects, the total percentage of students scoring at or above grade level was slightly below the statewide average. Statewide, 76 percent of third-graders scored at or above grade level in math, but 74 percent in Hillsborough achieved that.
In reading, 72 percent of third-graders statewide scored at or above grade level, but 71 percent of Hillsborough students were in that group.
The top schools in Hillsborough for reading were Learning Gate Community School, which had 98 percent of its 63 third-graders scoring at or above grade level; MacFarlane Park Elementary, with 97 percent of 63 students scoring at or above; and Bevis Elementary, with 97 percent of 142 students scoring at or above.
The top schools in Hillsborough for math were Bevis, with 97 percent of its third-graders scoring at or above grade level; McKitrick Elementary, with 96 percent of its 146 students; Fishhawk Creek Elementary, with 95 percent of its 187 students; and Westchase Elementary, with 95 percent of its 166 third-graders.
