Florida State University officials might consider closing the school's Panama City campus and eliminating 21 programs because of tough budget constraints.

According to a draft of a proposal released Monday, programs that are being considered for elimination include anthropology, molecular biophysics, oceanography and software engineering.

FSU officials also propose closing the school's Panama City campus effective Jan. 1, 2010. Various other programs could also be reduced, merged or restructured.

According to the released documents, the plan is one of several proposals designed to help the university cope with possible budget reductions.

FSU President T.K. Wetherell told the Tallahassee Democrat that the proposed changes were "almost unbearable to consider."
