The University of South Florida and Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota have made a three-year relationship official with a formal agreement to join forces on science, education and economic development projects.
Mote and USF's College of Marine Science regularly work together in research on red tide, fisheries management, marine mammals, sharks and the effect of toxic substances on the marine environment.
The new agreement, announced today, will enable them to collaborate on research and technology transfer projects in other disciplines. It will also open up opportunities for new research grants and funding.
"This is an unparalleled opportunity," said USF Vice President for Research Karen Holbrook in a USF news release. "It builds a stronger and broader effort for our research efforts and educational activities - from marine science, to engineering, environmental sciences, business and medicine."
USF's Research Park and the Mote Aquaculture Research Park will soon begin working together on a project using new sustainable energy technologies.
One of Mote's major endeavors has been a 17-year project, costing $15 million, to find new ways to farm fish without harming the environment, said Mote president Kuman Madadevan.
"We think these efforts should also become an important new economic driver for the state of Florida."
