Campers recycle with a dab of razzle dazzle

Samantha Cano, 10, had thought about a garden theme for a stool she was redecorating, but then she went out for dessert and got inspired.

She painted the little stool a cotton candy pink, spatter-painted its legs and drew designs of ice cream, Gummi bears, taffy and cupcakes on the top.

The makeover came during "Recycle, Razzle, Dazzle, Reuse" camp last week at Independent Day School in Carrollwood. Children brought in old wooden tables, chairs and stools to transform with paint, glitter and rhinestones.

Samantha, a fifth-grader at Villa Madonna School, started with plain white furniture and was thrilled with the result.

"I had too much white in my room," she said.

Jill Campisciano led the camp, teaching the children how to mix colors from the three primary colors and helping them with their designs. They also repainted two doors, which will be donated to the school, with Earth-friendly advice.

"This is their form of self-expression," Campisciano said. "They did an amazing job."
