NAPLES — Officials say dead panther has been found along U.S. 41 in southwest Florida.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reports that the remains of the 5-year-old uncollared male were discovered Monday morning. Experts believe the animal was killed by a vehicle.

This is the fifth Florida panther death in 2012. They have all occurred in Collier County.

Scientists believe there are more than 160 of the endangered cats left in the wild.
