The Thanksgiving holiday weekend is considered one of the busiest travel holidays of the year. AAA estimates that 38.4 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles from home this year. That's up 14 percent from last year.
Many of those travelers will be boarding planes.
At Tampa International Airport, officials estimate that more than 58,000 passengers will fly into and out of the airport this holiday weekend.
This morning, the airport was bustling with activity. At the blue departure area, cars were lined up dropping off passengers and luggage before dawn. Inside the terminal, the lines were nominal as passengers checked in and got their tickets.
Michele Matter works for Travelocity, the online travel agency, and was spending the day at the airport monitoring lines and relaying information online and via Twitter. She and 11 other Travelocity employees are doing that at 12 of the busiest airports in the country.
Matter says Tampa International really has holiday travel down.
"Everything is moving very smoothly," she said. "This airport really has things under control. So, any time there's the slightest delay, it seems like they really step in to maybe open more security lines, and things are moving very smoothly."
Passengers like Brittany Graham seemed to notice.
"I just got off of work and came straight here to the airport thinking I would need to be here so much earlier," Graham said. "My flight's not until 9:55, so I have a little bit of time to cruise around, I guess."
There were a handful of delays in the arrival and departure categories, but they were minimal.
