TAMPA - An injured dog's owner was charged Friday with third-degree animal cruelty, a felony, after she failed to provide adequate medical care, Hillsborough County Animal Services spokeswoman Marti Ryan said.
Georgina Sandobal, 35, of Tampa, posted $2,000 bond and was released from Orient Road Jail later that day, records show.
Ryan said Sandobal's 5- to 6-month-old mixed-breed dog, Venus, has a "sweet disposition" and a badly fractured leg.
Ryan told News Channel 8 the dog was recently hit by a car and Sandobal took her to a veterinary clinic. There was a disagreement over the cost of care and Sandobal left with the dog untreated, Ryan said.
The clinic contacted Animal Services, and an investigator visited the owner early last week and cited her for failing to provide medical care, Ryan said.
Upon a follow-up visit, it was discovered the dog still had not received care and was suffering, Ryan told News Channel 8.
"Venus will need cage rest and recuperative care following surgery, and eventually, a loving forever-home," Ryan said.
The dog will be taken to Tampa Bay Veterinary Emergency Services for surgery at a reduced cost, Ryan said.
