Regional USF Chief Resigns

Karen White, the chancellor of the University of South Florida St. Petersburg, is stepping down from her post at the regional campus, six months after the school was placed on probation by its accreditors.

White will serve as senior adviser to the university president's urban and metropolitan higher education initiatives. White has led the regional campus since 2003, having served as the college of fine arts dean at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Her departure comes as the campus is trying to turn around its accrediting problems. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools placed USF St. Petersburg on probation in June, finding it violated two standards of accreditation.

White was chancellor at USF St. Petersburg at a time when the campus sought separate accreditation from the rest of the USF system. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools awarded the campus accreditation in June 2006, which empowered it to make its own decisions on its needs.

Two years later, SACS announced that USF St. Petersburg didn't properly document its students' competency in college-level general education or its students' achievements. It placed the campus on probation for one year.

Margaret Sullivan, the president of Southeastern Consulting Group in Higher Education, will take over as chancellor of the regional campus.
