TAMPA - One of two dead dogs found in Shirley McKenzie's yard was so decomposed that investigators couldn't tell whether it was male or female, Hillsborough County Animal Services spokeswoman Marti Ryan said.
"She stated that she was aware that the dogs were there and that they had belonged to her son, who had moved out," Ryan said of McKenzie. "However, she did nothing about it. She did not surrender the dogs to animal services or anyone else. She used no resources at all to care for the dogs or provide any resources for the dogs. She allowed them to die, honestly."
Hillsborough County deputies arrested McKenzie at 6:51 p.m. Monday.
The dead dogs found at 3604 Beechwood Blvd. were pit bulls or pit bull mixes, Ryan said. One was in a cage, and the other was lying nearby.
McKenzie, 54, was charged with two counts of cruelty to animals and two counts of improper confinement of animals.
McKenzie's bail was set at $5,000. She was released from jail Monday night.
She could not be reached for comment.
