Wildlife Officials Look Out For Monkey

»  Comments | Post a Comment

ORANGE PARK - Wildlife officials are trying to track down a monkey recently spotted running around a Clay County subdivision.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission investigators believe the monkey is a Japanese macaque, based on photos recently provided to the agency.

The commission is borrowing a trap from the Jacksonville Humane Society and plans to place it in a wooded area away from the homes.

David Lee, a commission investigator, said people should not attempt to catch the animal themselves because macaques have sharp teeth and are prone to bite.

Officials don't know where the animal came from, and no permit has been issued to anyone in the area to keep a captive macaque.
