TAMPA - A line of thunderstorms moved in from the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday, dousing the Tampa Bay area for much of the afternoon and dumping as much as 2 inches of rain in parts of Hillsborough and Pasco counties.

Some of the most intense rain fell in downtown Tampa in the afternoon, at a rate of about an inch per hour, the National Weather Service said. Areas of northern Hillsborough County received at least an inch of rain, while parts of coastal Pasco and Pinellas counties got as much as 2 inches. Most of Pinellas County had between a tenth- and a quarter-inch of rainfall, forecasters said.

The first batch of storms to hit Tarpon Springs and west Pasco on Sunday morning knocked out power to about 11,000 customers. Power was restored in about two hours. In Holiday, Bonita Road and surrounding streets flooded.

With a 60 percent chance of rain today, forecasters say between a quarter- and half-inch is possible throughout the day. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected all week, with a 40 percent chance of rain forecast for Friday and Saturday.
