Hillsborough High Might Extend Partial Lockdown

Hillsborough High School students might return to class Thursday under a modified lockdown if a 19-year-old man remains at large after being accused of threatening his 15-year-old girlfriend this morning, officials said.

A modified lockdown had been in effect at the school at 5000 N. Central Ave. since 7:20 a.m., Tampa police said. Officers say they searched for the 19-year-old, who threatened the girl at a bus stop, throughout the day.

A modified lockdown means the school's doors are locked and outdoor activities are suspended, school district spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said. About 1,950 students attend the school.

Officers provided extra security for dismissal at 2:40 p.m., Cobbe said.

As for Thursday, "we'll play it by ear," depending on whether police locate the 19-year-old, Cobbe said.

The 15-year-old told police that her boyfriend pulled out a gun at her bus stop about 6 a.m. and told her he was going to get her, either at the bus stop or the school.

Cobbe and police declined to say whether the girl had attended school after the threat.

In an unrelated incident, police say they charged 16-year-old Iesha Webb with a felony, making a false bomb threat to a school, after she called in a bomb threat from her cell phone while in class shortly before 8 a.m. She faces expulsion from Hillsborough High School, Cobbe said.
