Reporter Resigns Amid E-Mail Scandal

A Boston Globe reporter who reportedly sent racy e-mail to a married school official whom she covered while working as a reporter in Miami has resigned, the newspaper said Friday.

Globe spokesman Bob Powers said Tania deLuzuriaga, who was hired by the newspaper last fall, has quit her job as an education reporter.

"The only thing I can say is she resigned to pursue other opportunities," Powers said. "Nobody who was on the Globe hiring team knew about the events that were reported on in Miami."

Her resignation came after e-mail messages appeared online and in various newspapers detailing what seems to be a romantic relationship between deLuzuriaga and Alberto Carvalho while she was The Miami Herald's education reporter in 2007. It was unclear who distributed the e-mail.

The e-mail surfaced earlier this month after Carvalho, 44, then associate superintendent, was named superintendent of the Miami-Dade public schools. He was offered the superintendent job in Pinellas County but declined it.

Carvalho denied having an affair with deLuzuriaga, 27.

The e-mail was mostly attributed to her but with a few apparent responses from Carvalho. He suggested they might have been doctored, then said they could be genuine but he may not have read them all.

The e-mail includes suggestive banter. "Will you be completely offended if I jump into your arms the next time I see you place permitting?" said one attributed to deLuzuriaga from Aug. 7, 2007.

It ends: "Love, love, love you. xoxoxo."

Carvalho issued a statement on deLuzuriaga's resignation: "She is an excellent, professional journalist and will do well wherever her career takes her."

The Herald's ethics policy prohibits reporters from having personal relationships with sources that could create a conflict of interest.

Anders Gyllenhaal, Herald executive editor, said the paper is trying to authenticate the e-mail.

The Miami-Dade school board is expected to vote on Carvalho's contract in October, but the hiring faces resistance from some board members who think there should be an ethics investigation.
