Humana is offering a $100,000 grant

The city's budget next year is expected to be tight, and that means tough times for nonprofit organizations that depend on government money to support their causes.

Humana, one of the Tampa Bay area's largest health benefits companies, is giving local nonprofit and charitable groups the opportunity to fill the funding gap with a one-time $100,000 grant.

The Tampa Bay Benefits charitable program grant will be awarded to a nonprofit group in the counties of Hillsborough, Hernando, Pasco or Pinellas. Last year's award was given to the Warrick Dunn Foundation, headed by former Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Warrick Dunn.

Facing a more-than-$52 million budget shortfall next fiscal year, Mayor Pam Iorio plans to slash the city's funding to local nonprofit organizations by as much as 20 percent. Iorio said the cuts are needed to avoid large-scale layoffs and a reduction in services.

In 2009, the city gave more than $2.8 million to local nonprofit organizations.

The deadline to apply for Humana's $100,000 grant is Aug. 27. For information and applications, go to www.tampabaybenefits.org.
