Updates and renovations are one thing. Building the area's newest hospital from the ground up is another beast.
A month from now, All Children's Hospital will move its operations to a $403 million, 259-bed facility a block from its cramped 42-year-old home. Every patient, doctor, nurse and staff member had been ready to pick up and move next week, but officials announced Friday that delays in getting some equipment will push the massive transition to Jan. 9.
The 10-story hospital, totaling more than 1.1 million square feet, is being called one of the state's largest commercial construction projects. Construction has taken more than four years.
The main hospital has nearly triple the overall space of the existing facility and increases the patient area to 795,000 square feet. Major space is dedicated to specialties such as pediatric cancer, neonatal intensive care, surgery, and labor and delivery. For the first time, Bayfront Medical Center's Baby Place will be adjacent to the pediatric hospital, meaning mothers and sick babies will stay close.
Multimillion-dollar gifts from Tampa Bay Lightning captain Vinny Lecavalier, Wal-Mart Stores and the hospital's guild covered the cost of significant portions of the hospital. The rest came primarily from money raised through a long-term capital campaign and a bond issue. COMPARING THE OLD AND NEW, Page 4
