In response to the escalated violence in the Middle East, the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Tampa Jewish Federation will host a "solidarity rally for Israel" today at 7 p.m.
The event, which is open to the public, is meant to demonstrate the support of people in the region for Israel and for peace in the Mideast.
It will take place at Congregation Schaarai Zedek, 3303 W. Swann Ave. Several community leaders, including former intelligence officer and Justice Department prosecutor John Loftus, will offer prayers and remarks. Loftus, a St. Petersburg resident, noted author and expert on terrorism, is a former president of the Florida Holocaust Museum.
Tight security is expected. No parcels, backpacks or large purses will be allowed in the synagogue, and everyone will be required to pass through a metal detector. All bags and purses will be inspected prior to entry.
Tampa's rally is one of dozens across the country taking place this week for National Week of Solidarity for Israel, sponsored by United Jewish Communities. For information, call (813) 769-4729.
