There's an opening in Tampa for a federal magistrate judge. U.S. Magistrate Mary Scriven recently was elevated to district court judge.

Magistrate judges conduct preliminary proceedings in criminal cases, preside over trials for misdemeanor cases and conduct other proceedings assigned by district court judges.

The job pays more than $155,000 a year.

According to the court's Web site - www.flmd.uscourts.gov - applicants must, among things:

• Be, and have been for at least five years, a member in good standing of the bar of the highest court of a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands, and have been engaged in the active practice of law for at least five years (with some substitutes authorized)

• Be of good moral character, emotionally stable and mature, in good health, and patient and courteous

• Be younger than 70

• Not be related to a judge of the district court

A merit selection panel will review applicants and make recommendations to the district court judges.

Applications are available on the Web site and must be received in Orlando by March 6.
