'10 Things I Hate About You' is likable

There is plenty to like about "10 Things I Hate About You," a teen romantic comedy debuting at 8 tonight on ABC Family.

Though it's not all that original, it is entertaining

Inspired by a 1999 hit movie of the same title and William Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew," this new comedy is aimed at the network's teen audience. However, anyone who has even been to high school can appreciate it.

Though fashion, music and teen slang have changed over the decades, the basic experience of first love, high school cliques and trying to fit in is widely relatable.

Those familiar with Shakespeare will get a kick out of the references.

The story opens with the Stratford sisters - the intellectual Kat and desperate-to-be-popular Bianca - moving to a new town where they enroll at Padua High School.

The younger Bianca (Meaghan Martin) wants only to become a cheerleader. Her older cynical and sarcastic sister Kat (Lindsey Shaw) has only distain for the school's caste system. Immediately, she clashes with the school's mean girl diva, the snooty head cheerleader Chastity (Dana Davis).

At home, the Stratford girls' father, a gynecologist, only wants them to steer clear of sex. Comic Larry Miller reprises his film role as the overprotective single dad.

One of the school nerds, Cameron (Nicholas Braun), longs for Bianca. But it seems like a hopeless quest because she is on the same wavelength as a doofus quarterback (Chris Zylka) who secretly wants to be a male model.

And Kat gets the attention of a brooding outsider, the handsome Patrick Verona. Patrick is played by Ethan Peck, grandson of the late Gregory Peck. This character was played by Heath Ledger in the movie. Look for the young Peck to become a teen heartthrob.

While this story covers familiar territory, an appealing cast and clever dialogue (with pop culture references) make it fun.

When vapid Bianca admits that she is befriending the head cheerleader just to be popular, Kat says, "She's just a teenage Kim Jong Il," to which Bianca replies, "Speak English, you show-off!"

When Kat throws down a newspaper and cries, "We're the world's last superpower and yet we don't have universal health care!" her dad quips: "Are you talking to me or the Democrats in your head?"

SYFY SILLY: The Sci-Fi Channel becomes SyFy today. And with a silly name change the network launches a silly new drama. "Warehouse 13" debuts at 9 tonight. Veteran character actor Saul Rubinek co-stars as Artie, the eccentric caretaker of a secret warehouse where paranormal objects are stored.

Helping him retrieve some missing objects of weirdness are agents Pete (Eddie McClintock) and Myka (Joanne Kelly). Unfortunately, they lack chemistry and their cases lack imagination. This is not even close to the cleverness of "Eureka," which returns to SyFy on Friday.

ROAD TRIP: NBC trots out a new summer reality series at 8 tonight. "The Great American Road Trip" may have viewers saying, "are we there yet?" if it proves to be a dud.

Seven families (thankfully none from Florida) set out in RVs to travel the fame Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles. Along the way, they will face elimination challenges. Each family consists of two parents and two teens. The last family standing gets $100,000 and the joy of having traveled 2,000 miles without iPods, portable DVD players and cell phones (a requirement imposed to foster bonding).
