State funds water projects

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The state is setting aside about $23 million in federal stimulus loans to replace several miles of aging water distribution pipes in downtown Tampa, starting this fall.

The financial help comes in the form of low-interest loans from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection through the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Tampa has also been approved for a $2.5 million DEP grant to help with the projects.

The funds will allow for the replacement of about nine miles of water pipeline, some of them more than a century old, in downtown Tampa and Davis Islands.

The projects will improve water pressure, fire protection and service reliability while creating about 125 jobs, according to the city. Work is expected to start in October.

The construction of the downtown portion has been awarded to CH2M Hill Constructors Inc. while the Davis Islands project will be constructed by Dallas 1 Corporation.
