The snowstorm that plastered the Southeast during the weekend and migrated to pound the Northeast today caused 27 canceled flights by midmorning at Tampa International Airport.
That does not count more than two dozen delayed flights arriving or leaving TIA.
Things could grow worse later today if the weather continues to deteriorate at northern airports, said Brenda Geoghagan, TIA spokeswoman.
On a typical day, non-weather related problems cause two or three cancelations, she said. Each canceled flight usually affects 100 to 150 passengers.
Most of the trouble is at major airports in the Northeast, where some places could see a foot of snow today.
The National Weather Service in New York, N.Y., says that after a brief lull in snowfall this morning another round of snow will bring up to 4 inches. In addition, winds are forecast to pick up to 20 to 30 mph and cause near whiteout conditions.
In Boston, the weather service says snow should continue through the afternoon.
Cancellations are concentrated in New York, Newark, Boston and Hartford, though airports in Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia are affected. Atlanta also has seen cancellations.
Geoghagan said passengers should stay in touch with their airlines about the status of their flights.
