A University of South Florida student told investigators that he disabled a smoke alarm in his dorm room so he could smoke marijuana undetected. Early Friday morning, he was charged on both counts, one of which is a felony.
Ruben Lopez, 19, who lives in Room 547 of Beta Hall, on Maple Drive, was arrested by USF police and charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana and disabling a fire alarm, a third-degree felony.
He was being held at Orient Road Jail. Bail was set at $7,500.
According to an arrest affidavit, Lopez pulled the wires from the device and hid it under his bed in the room. Officers searched the room and found a marijuana cigarette in Lopez's dresser drawer, police said.
