Slain woman's family, friends seek answers

It's not an official reopening of the investigation, but family and friends spent Saturday searching for clues in the 2-year-old unsolved murder of Tracy McClelland of Tampa.

McClelland's body was discovered buried behind a Tampa business along 71st Street near Orient Road in 2007. Investigators identified her remains by the serial number of her breast implants. She was 36.

Police have been unable to make an arrest in the case, so a team of about 30 friends and family fanned out Saturday, passing out fliers at homes and businesses in the area where she was last seen.

McClelland's mother, Janice Garvin, said the family was too grief stricken at the time of her daughter's death to get involved in the investigation, but now thanks to an old friend's actions they're hoping to draw renewed attention to the case.

"We feel there's someone in this area that knew something that after 21/2 years might come forward either out of guilt or out of remorse or out of revenge for someone they know," Garvin said.

McClelland's former high school classmate, Peter Jung, organized the search for new leads and has set up a Web site to update unsolved crimes, www.who killedme.tv.

Jung heard about McClelland's murder at their 20-year class reunion and said he hopes his background in information technology can help crack the case. He said police are not involved in his Web site but are not necessarily opposed to what he's trying to do.

"They understood that the case hasn't been solved and nothing new has come from it, and this is probably the best way to move forward if it hasn't gotten solved yet," Jung said.
