The South Florida Water Management District has approved year-round water restrictions that its board says will reduce overall water demand by up to 10 percent.
The restrictions approved Friday cover the district's 16 counties from Orlando to the Keys. They could take affect as soon as January, but a coalition of utilities is fighting the move.
Outside irrigation of landscaping would be limited to twice a week in Charlotte, Highlands, Okeechobee, Orange, Osceola and Polk counties. The rule would allow for three-day-a-week irrigation in Broward, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Lee, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Palm Beach and St. Lucie counties.
No irrigation would be allowed between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Hand-watering is not subject to the new rule.
