A ballistics test couldn't officially determine which gun fired a bullet that struck a Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy in the neck last month. The bullet is from the same type of gun the deputy used.
Test results released Friday show the bullet that struck Deputy Miguel Galarza is .40-caliber. Galarza fired one round from his .40-caliber handgun during the incident Oct. 13, deputies said.
Miguel Serrano, 28, is being held without bail on charges of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and robbery-home invasion. He has pleaded not guilty.
Serrano had a .38-caliber gun when arrested.
Galarza was shot responding to a 911 call at a Town 'N Country apartment. Investigators say Galarza confronted Serrano at the door and heard moans and a disturbance inside. He ordered Serrano to the ground, and there was a struggle. Galarza fired one round and fell to the floor, authorities say.
He has returned to work.
