Bail call delayed in fire attack

A man accused of hitting his estranged wife in the head with a hammer and setting her on fire will be held without bail at least until next week.

Hillsborough Circuit Judge Walter R. Heinrich said he didn't have enough information to make a decision Thursday on whether to allow bail for Christopher Hanney. He set the case for a hearing Tuesday.

Hanney, 44, is charged with attempted first-degree murder. He was arrested Wednesday at Tampa General Hospital and transferred to Orient Road Jail.

Authorities said Hanney confronted Audrey Mabrey, 26, on Tuesday at the home they shared at 7565 Oxford Gardens Circle in Apollo Beach. Someone called 911 reporting a domestic dispute at the home and said that someone had dumped an accelerant on the other and might have set the house on fire.

With her clothes on fire, Mabrey ran from the home to a neighbor's house. The neighbor extinguished the flames.

Mabrey said her husband "had done this to her," the sheriff's office said.

She was transported to TGH with burns on 80 percent of her body and remains in critical condition.

Hanney, who was found in the backyard, also was burned.

The couple's two sons weren't home at the time.

Heinrich said he didn't have any details about the crime or the victim's condition, only the charge. Prosecutors said they couldn't provide additional details.

The judge told prosecutors he wants an update on Mabrey's condition at Tuesday's hearing.

Deputies also responded to the home Oct. 20 after Mabrey accused Hanney of pushing her around and trying to rape her.

No charges were filed because of inconsistent stories and Mabrey's unwillingness to pursue the case, officials said.
