The Hillsborough County School Board adopted a $3 billion budget Thursday that will save property owners a little money come tax time and approved a contract with school employees that includes no salary increases.
No one lost a job or had to take unpaid time off. Some employees have a chance to earn more money than last year through training incentives, said Luis Perez, president of the Hillsborough County School Employees Federation at Thursday's board meeting. Union members ratified the board's plan by 98 percent - an unheard-of number, he said.
The budget is about $2 million less than last year. School officials are trying to deal with a projected shortfall of about $12 million before Oct. 1. That could change, depending on total student enrollment, which the district expects to near 189,000. The board adopted tax rate of $7.69 per $1,000 of taxable property, down from last year's $7.77.
