The robbers told the barber shop customers not to move, then shot one man who tried to run away, police said.
Police are searching for the two robbers they say held up Bowers Barber Shop at 1304 N. Nebraska Ave. on Friday afternoon.
Two men burst into the barber shop at about 3:30 p.m., police said.
One of the men shot into the ceiling and told the six customers and the owner to get on the floor.
"This is a robbery - give up what you got," he said, according to witnesses.
The customers threw their wallets and jewelry onto the floor and then got on the floor themselves.
One of the customers was a 9-year-old boy who had been dropped off for a haircut.
Police said Adolphus Gilbert, 35, stood up and tried to run out the back door. One of the robbers shot him in the shoulder; the bullet exited through his chest.
Gilbert was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he underwent surgery. He was listed in serious but stable condition Friday evening.
Police said the suspects were last seen wearing all dark clothing, black gloves, black hoodies and white bandanas covering their faces. One suspect was wearing black Nike tennis shoes; the other was wearing white Nike tennis shoes.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Tampa Police Department at (813) 231-6130.
