As Paul Popalis supervised a woman carefully lifting light weights in the new outpatient rehabilitation center at Morton Plant North Bay Hospital, he extolled the virtues of the facility.
Popalis, a rehabilitation coordinator, rattled off facts about the gleaming facility, part of the Medical Arts Building unveiled Thursday.
"We have three times the space now, and it's a more pleasant experience for patients," he said. "All of our clinicians are specially trained to use the devices. The administrators had a lot of input, and they listened to our patients and customers about access and comfort."
The rehabilitation center uses a revolutionary fitness technology made by Bioness to help stroke victims strengthen their arms and legs. Like the rest of the hospital's $49 million expansion, the center, at 6600 Madison St., was designed with input from those who work in and benefit from the facilities.
The 45,000-square-foot Starkey Medical Tower houses the intensive care, cardiac and medical surgical units, respiratory care services, and 56,000-square-foot Medical Arts Building with its sleep disorders center and outpatient lab.
The tower was named to recognize a $1 million donation by Jay B. and Marsha Starkey. The hospital now has 154 beds.
