Local artist Noah Deledda has taken a lowly crushed can and elevated it to high art.
Deledda, 31, of Tampa, is the winner of the Art of Can national competition sponsored by Red Bull, the energy drink maker. The winners were announced Wednesday in Miami.
"It was amazing. I'm in shock; I really am," Deledda said. "I think just the idea of my piece was just a literal interpretation of the event. Art. Of. Can."
He says he created the "crushing art" technique - indenting a can with his thumbs and then embossing the surface using a pen - that he employed in the piece, called "One Can Wonder."
Deledda is a member of the Ybor Art Colony, a group of artists who collaborate on exhibits and represent Ybor City's art scene.
His entry was selected from several hundred submitted for the multimedia competition, which was open to anyone inspired to create art from a can. He won a trip to Switzerland for June's Art 41 Basel event, an international art show for Modern and contemporary works.
The free Miami exhibition - built on South Beach and featuring 47 selected artists from across the country - can be viewed through March 14.
