A pipe bomb found Wednesday morning at a South Tampa nursing home turned out to be a hoax, police said.
The fake bomb sparked an evacuation at Bayshore Pointe Nursing and Rehab Center, 3117 W. Gandy Blvd.
A maintenance manager found the device on a desk in a third-floor maintenance area, police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said. He told his supervisor, an administrator, who took the device to a first-floor office and called police.
The Tampa Police Department's bomb team took X-rays and determined it didn't contain explosives.
About 50 of the center's residents spent two hours outside during the evacuation. Two residents were taken to a hospital for observation after they had trouble breathing, McElroy said.
Investigators were trying to determine the source of the fake bomb.
