Four students, five parents and a math teacher from Davidsen Middle School are stranded in London because of flight cancellations caused by the Iceland volcano.
The group was on a spring break trip unaffiliated with the Westchase school, Principal Brent McBrien said. They were expected to return last Saturday.
But last week, the volcano Eyjafjallajokull began erupting and spewing volcanic ash into the air, causing thousands of European flights to be grounded as a safety precaution.
Now, seventh-grade math teacher Christopher Hallman and the families don't plan on being home before today, McBrien said.
"I hear they are ready to come back," he said.
McBrien said he doesn't know the names of the students stuck in London. A fellow teacher has had sporadic contact with Hallman, who started working for the district in 2006.
Such trips abroad are not uncommon among teachers, students and parents, McBrien said. Groups meet off campus, sometimes at Starbucks, to plan trips.
"Teachers sometimes want to be able to travel, so they partner with parents," said McBrien, who recalled husband-and-wife teachers taking a group to Spain last year. "And parents in Westchase like to travel."
