The death of Osama bin Laden is putting a new focus on what role Iran might play in al-Qaida's future. Intelligence officials are analyzing reports that Saif al-Adel, is al-Qaida's interim leader. He was last known to be under house arrest outside Tehran.
Al-Adel, one of al-Qaida's founders, is among many al-Qaida figures who fled into Iran after the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan. They were arrested there in 2003 and placed under house arrest. Some have been able to come and go, and the U.S. has long worried that Iran might free them to restore al-Qaida's ranks.
Intelligence officials say there's no hard proof to a report by an analyst in London that al-Adel has temporarily taken over.
