CLEARWATER - After a manhunt that involved locking down several schools, police arrested a 19-year-old in connection with a shooting and car wreck that left one man dead and another injured Monday afternoon.

Gaylord Shaw

Gaylord Shaw, of 1112 S. Prospect Ave., was arrested just before 9:30 p.m. and charged with first-degree murder.

The incident began with an argument among several people outside a convenience store at Betty Lane and Springdale Street at 12:40 p.m. The argument escalated and bullets were fired at a car that held brothers Michael Scott, 23, and Antonio Scott, 24.

The car sped off and crashed into a pole on North Betty Lane and north of Woodbine Street. Michael Scott was killed and Antonio Scott was injured.

The car had at least two bullet holes in the back right door.

Antonio Scott was listed in stable condition at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. His injuries were from the car crash and not from the shooting, Clearwater public safety spokeswoman Elizabeth Daly-Watts said.

An autopsy for Michael Scott will be performed today. Authorities were uncertain of the cause of death.

Others may be involved, and the case is under investigation.

Five schools were put on lockdown because of the shooting: Kings Highway Elementary, Curtis Fundamental, JFK Middle School, Sandy Lane Elementary and Calvin Hunsinger Middle School.

One witness, Lou Horowitz, 42, who runs an auto-care shop, said he saw a group of young men standing around a car in the parking lot at the store and then heard eight to 10 shots.
