SARASOTA - A Sarasota police officer shot and killed a man who was reportedly resisting arrest Tuesday night.
The shooting occurred at about 8 p.m. in a commercial area at the intersection of U.S. 301 and Princeton Street.
Police spokesman Jay Frank said several people in the area called 911 before the shooting to report the man. Frank did not say why they called. He did not know the man's name.
When officers confronted the victim he resisted, and they used at least one stun gun to try to subdue him, but with no effect, Frank said.
"He continued to charge at another officer without stopping, and the gentleman died at that spot," he said.
Frank said he did not know if the man had a weapon. He also said he heard, but could not confirm, that the officer who shot the suspect tried to give him CPR.
Authorities surrounded the body with a black privacy fence and waited for the medical examiner to arrive.
The body was still at the scene at 10:30 p.m. Nearby were several yellow evidence markers.
Both U.S. 301 and Princeton Street were blocked off during the investigation.
Frank said he expects his agency will handle the investigation internally.
