City, MacDill Renew Mutual Aid Agreement

TAMPA - The city of Tampa and MacDill Air Force Base on Thursday renewed their agreement to provide mutual aid in the event of a military plane crash or other disaster.

The agreement is reviewed and renewed each time MacDill gets a new commander, Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Bill Wade said. Col. Robert D. Thomas took command of the 6th Air Mobility Wing at MacDill in March.

The agreement allows MacDill to assume full command of a crash scene involving aircraft from the U.S. military or any foreign nation. The base is conducting training missions for A-10s, F-16s and F-18s through Nov. 10.

"The thinking is a military jet can have ordnance or other unique materials that the city of Tampa may not be familiar with," Wade said.

MacDill has specialized equipment to fight such fires.
