A crash on Interstate 4 in which a pedestrian was struck and killed snarled traffic for miles.

The crash happened about 8:10 p.m. Monday on westbound I-4 near County Road 579. The name of the pedestrian was not immediately known, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol news release:

The male pedestrian, who wore a brown jacket and jeans, was struck in the center lane by a 2007 Toyota Camry. The Toyota's driver, 16-year-old Mohammad Hajaz of Plant City, then lost control of the car, which struck the right side of a 1994 Nissan Sentra in the inside lane.

A westbound 2001 Buick also struck the pedestrian. The Buick's driver, 61-year-old Thomas Tobin of Dunedin, then lost control of that vehicle, which struck the right side of a 2001 Dodge that had been in the outside lane.

The pedestrian died at the scene. The others had minor injuries or weren't injured.

The road was closed more than three hours, with traffic diverted onto McIntosh Road. The lanes reopened shortly after 11 p.m. Monday.
