Two women were killed and seven people were injured in a 10-vehicle pileup - triggered by a tractor-trailer - that closed U.S. 27 for nearly five hours today, Florida Highway Patrol said.

Stephanie A. Phillips, 37, of Haines City, was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Aveo when the crash occurred just before noon. She was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she died, Trooper Larry Coggins Jr. said.

Heather Hurd, 26, of Davenport, a passenger in a Mazda sedan, died at the scene, according to the FHP report.

The tractor-trailer barreled into the nine vehicles, including another tractor-trailer, that were northbound on U.S. 27 and waiting at a red light, according to FHP.

The accident in Polk County is under investigation.
