LAKELAND - Deputies are investigating a motorcycle crash that killed the operator Sunday afternoon and seriously injured a female passenger, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.
According to deputies, a 1993 Harley-Davidson carrying a man and a woman was westbound on Old Polk City Road in Lakeland about 12:15 p.m.
As the motorcycle approached Marylyn Drive, a 2001 Ford SUV driven by Mathew John Hurst, 38, turned east onto Old Polk City Road.
The SUV drove into the path of the motorcycle, deputies said.
The motorcycle struck the driver's side of the truck and the female passenger was thrown from the bike, investigators said.
She was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where she is listed in critical condition. The motorcycle driver died at the scene. Both were not wearing helmets, deputies said. Their names were not released because deputies have not been able to contact relatives, the sheriff's office said.
Hurst, the driver of the SUV, and two passengers received minor injuries and were treated at Lakeland Regional Medical Center then released this afternoon.
The investigation is ongoing.
