Pinellas County firefighters will head to Brevard County today to battle brush fires that have burned hundreds of acres and threatened hundreds of homes.
Twenty-two firefighters from the St. Petersburg, Pinellas Park, Largo, Safety Harbor, Palm Harbor, Treasure Island, South Pasadena, Gulfport and St. Pete Beach departments will head east with five fire engines, officials say.
The strike team is deploying through the state's mutual aid program.
Officials say high winds, dry conditions and high temperatures are expected to fuel the flames today in Volusia and Brevard counties, where the fires have burned thousands of acres.
Hundreds of homes in neighboring Brevard County also are under an evacuation order.
Forestry officials say two fires in Cocoa Beach have been contained but a fire in Malabar has grown to 2,100 acres and continues to threaten homes.
