ST PETERSBURG - An ambulance driver and paramedic were injured this afternoon when the ambulance they were in collided with a flatbed truck on Interstate 275, fire officials said.
According to Lt. Joel Granata of St. Petersburg Fire & Rescue, the SunStar ambulance was on its way to an emergency, with its lights and sirens activated, when it was struck in the rear by the flatbed truck, near Roosevelt Boulevard, at about 12:30 p.m.
At the time of the collision, the ambulance was slowing to change lanes, Granata said. After the collision, the ambulance struck a guardrail and spun into the median.
The ambulance driver, Scott Owen, 30, was in serious but stable condition at Bayfront Medical Center, said Larry Coggins, spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol, which is investigating the wreck.
The paramedic, William Amacoor, 37, was transported to Bayfront with minor injuries, Coggins said.
The driver of the flatbed truck was identified as Gregorio Colon, 56, Coggins said. Colon was not injured.
No one has been charged, Coggins said. An investigation is continuing.
