LAKELAND - A 19-month-old girl remained in critical condition today at St. Joseph's Hospital, where she was airlifted after being run over by a lawnmower, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
The child was on the front walkway with her grandmother, Nancy Moore, watching as her grandfather, Donald Ray Moore, operated a John Deere riding lawnmower shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday, sheriff's spokeswoman Donna Wood said. She said the Moores have custody of the toddler, Chelsea.
The girl then ran toward her grandfather, who was backing up the mower at the home on Poley Lane. He did not see or hear his granddaughter, Wood said. Nancy Moore tried to catch the child but failed, Wood said.
The child's right leg was run over and she suffered severe lacerations, Wood said.
