TAMPA - A man biking under an Interstate 4 overpass saw something he didn't expect early this morning: a car flying over his head.
The 1993 Chevrolet Camaro was traveling east on Interstate 4 near 21st Street about 2:15 a.m., when it crashed through a guardrail and vaulted over the overpass embankment, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
"I'm coming down the road, and I heard it when it hit up on the expressway," James Hilliard said. "The next thing I know, the car's coming over my head. It hit a tree, and both of the ladies were thrown out."
The car rotated around the palm tree and came to rest facing east on 21st Street, the accident report showed.
The driver, Natasha N. Wermuth, 21, of Valrico, and the passenger, Joleen M. Brown, 18, were taken to Tampa General Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman listed Wermuth in serious condition and Brown in fair condition this morning.
The crash is under investigation.
